on march 9, a benign tumour full of water, weighing over 5 kg, was removed from rama''s uterus. the woman, who has two sons and a daughter, is unhappy she could not have another child. the youngest child, who is nearing one year, is being looked after by her husband in nepal. "the tumour is rare because of the huge size and less weight because it is filled with water," says dr k. chandrika, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist. the laboratory which examined the ovarian cyst has confirmed it is not malignant. the operation was a difficult one because the tumour had adhered to all the parts, particularly the liver. "rama was strong and did not express any pain before or after the operation," the doctor said. the incision across the entire stomach did justice to the removal process as the tumour had spread from the sternum to the pubis, says the doctor. a possible reason for the quick growth of the tumour could be hormonal changes, says chandrika. since rama is from a poor family, the hospital would provide her free treatment for a fortnight - the time she would require for recovery. "from the hospital, i will head directly to nepal. i will have to spend two days in a train and two days in a bus," she adds.
